Medicare-funded Psychology

What is Medicare-funded psychology?

Medicare offers financial support for eligible individuals to access psychological therapy through the Better Access initiative. This program allows you to claim rebates for sessions with a Registered Psychologist.

Eligibility

Am I eligible?

To  access Medicare rebates, you need to:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident with a valid Medicare card
  • Obtain a Mental Care Treatment Plan from a GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician. This plan allows you to access up to 10 sessions per calendar year with a Medicare-registered psychologist.
  • Alternatively, you may obtain a Chronic Management Plan with you have a chronic or complex medical condition. This plan allows to access up to 5 sessions per calendar year.

  • Book an appointment with your GP
  • Discuss your mental health concerns
  • Your GP may prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan
  • Book an initial appointment at Lucas Support and Care
  • Provide your referral and Mental Health Plan at your initial session

What does Medicare cover?

  • You will receive a rebate for each eligible session (not full coverage)
  • As of the first quarter of 2026, rebates are $98.95 per session
